Clinic member Windy Majer competed with three other CSL trial team members in The South Texas Mock Trial Challenge hosted by South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas on March 29th through April 1st. Trial team members Windy Majer, Johnathan Pennington, Joshua Perlman, and Kristie Scott represented Charlotte School of Law against approximately forty other teams.
In the preliminary rounds, CSL went up against Fordham University School of Law, Brooklyn Law School of Law, and Golden Gate University. These preliminary rounds were presided over and scored by prestigious judges, including Texas Supreme Court Justice David Medina. After an exceptional performance, CSL was able to advance to the Octofinal Rounds. Advancing with them were teams from American University, DC; Campbell, NC; Brooklyn Law School, NY; Fordham University, NY; Georgetown, DC; Northern Kentucky University, KY; Nova Southeastern University, FL; Samford University, Cumberland School of Law, AL; Texas Southern University, TX; The University of California, Hastings; University of Georgia; University of Houston; and the University of Maryland. CSL faced off against Georgetown in the Octofinals. Georgetown won the round and went on to win the entire competition.
The team represented CSL well by displaying strong advocacy skills and improvement in the courtroom in every round. The team brought back a trophy for the school that sent the message to every school that was present for the competition – CSL’s trial team is a major contender and is a team to watch out for next year.
The team was coached by Professor Robert Corbett, Kyle Payne, Christine Volponi, and Professor Mark Matthews who accompanied the team to TX. Mr. Payne and Mrs. Volponi are both CSL graduates and former trial team members.
